A Distinction Earned by Only a Select Group of Arizona Attorneys

An Arizona Bar Certified Specialist is an attorney who has demonstrated exceptional experience, advanced knowledge, and the highest standards of professionalism and ethics in a defined area of law.

Out of more than 20,000 active Arizona attorneys, only about 500 are certified specialists.

Who Awards Board Certification?

Board Certification is granted by the State Bar of Arizona’s Board of Legal Specialization, a program established under the authority of the Supreme Court of Arizona. The state bar is responsible for licensing and regulating Arizona attorneys, overseeing professional conduct, and promoting excellence within the legal profession.

What Does an Attorney Have to Do to Become Certified?

Earning board certification requires years of focused practice and a detailed application and review. Depending on the specialty, attorneys must:

  • Hold an active Arizona law license
  • Practice law for at least five to seven years
  • Devote 50%–70% of their practice to the specialty
  • Demonstrate substantial involvement in significant cases
  • Pass a comprehensive written exam
  • Receive strong peer reviews from attorneys and judges
  • Show consistent professionalism, integrity, and competence

How Long Does Certification Last?

Certification must be renewed every five years. To maintain their status, attorneys must continue to meet the Board’s high standards, including:

  • Ongoing substantial involvement in their specialty
  • Continued advanced legal education
  • Strong peer evaluations
  • Compliance with ethical and professional rules
  • A clean disciplinary record

A Credential You Can Trust

Board Certification is more than a professional label. It reflects years of focused experience, proven results, and recognition from peers and the legal community. When an attorney is an Arizona Bar Certified Specialist, you can be confident they have been thoroughly vetted and recognized as among the most qualified practitioners in their field.
